Baldy Mountain...........

A little bit of
Northern New Mexico history

1867

Gold discovered on Baldy Mountain,
started a rush in northeast New Mexico.
Settlements like Baldy Town, Elizabethtown
and Virginia City sprouted like mushrooms.

2007

140 years later two intrepid brokers from our office
took a trip up Baldy Mountain to the site of the
old Baldy town and the Deep Tunnel Mine.
Here are some of the pictures they took:
Baldy Mountain, New Mexico
Located at about 12,000' altitude, the Baldy mine was not an easy place to live.
Access was hard and the day to day life was even harder. This cabin is one of only a few that are left to tell about it.
Most of the land on the east side of Baldy Mountain was purchased and donated to Philmont Scout Ranch in 1962.
The land on the west side of the mountain is privately owned.
Eagle Nest Lake from Baldy Mountain, New Mexico
But maybe this gorgeous view made up for all the hardships
This picture looks south from the Baldy mine down the Moreno Valley (formerly the Maxwell Land Grant).
In the front right of the picture you can see the town of Eagle Nest.
Angel Fire Ski Area is almost visible at the top right of the picture.
Eagle Nest Lake, after many years of private ownership, is now a State Park.
Gold mining continued on Baldy Mountain until the 1940's
but it wasn't very profitable because there was a shortage of water for hydraulic placer mining,
and the laws were also getting stricter in regards to water pollution.

This is the lovely view from the slag heap of the mine, looking west towards the Wheeler Peak Wilderness area.

Unlike the early miners, our intrepid explorers were able to drive up to the mines. they had a 'grand day out'!
(if you look closely in one of the pictures you may find one of our explorers)
